Definition from the Australia Floral Art Association manual 2006.

“The typical traditional mass (triangular, oval, fan, circular, cube or diamond shaped) is comprised of three parts – the outline, the focal area and the transitional area between the other two.

Line materials (spikes, buds etc) are used for the outline and to establish the overall shape of the design. The focal area comprises the most dominant, foliage etc (in both form and colour) with plant material of lesser importance placed transitionally to complete the design.”
