Class 2 ‘Mutilated and Manipulated’
Class 3 ‘Overflowing’
Class 4 ‘Textural Qualities’
Class 5 ‘Pot et Fleur’ A Design Style – AFAA Manual p43
Definition of a Pot et Fleur
⦁ A design incorporating growing plants and fresh cut flowers assembled in one container, which may be in or out of the pots
⦁ Plants should be chosen for their similar cultural needs, and to provide a variety of heights, shapes, textures and colours.
⦁ Driftwood, interesting branch/es (without foliage) and stones may be used.
⦁ A suitable ancillary container to hold the cut flowers should be positioned to keep the soil out, and allow water to be added
⦁ Moss, stones, bark or wood may be used to cover the soil
⦁ Cut foliage should not be used
INTERMEDIATE CLASSES
Class 6 ‘Inspired by Wood’
Class 7 ‘Formal Linear’ A Design Style – AFAA Manual p59
Definition of a FORMAL LINEAR
This design is where the line and form of the material are exploited to their limits.
⦁ Line can travel in any direction.
⦁ Generally asymmetrical balance (symmetrical balance is possible) – a few simple forms only used and shown to maximum effect.
⦁ Design is all-important. Usually Radial – starts from the centre of growth that holds the design together.
⦁ The lines can be curved, straight or in parallel forms.
⦁ Materials are grouped together in their own area.
⦁ Lines should not be crossed.
⦁ Restraint is important
⦁ ‘Less is more’ is very pertinent to this design.
NOVICE CLASSES
Class 8 ‘Sticks, Stones and Succulents’
Class 9 ‘A Basic Modern’ A Design Style – AFAA Manual p48
Definition of a BASIC MODERN A tailored design, using a minimum of material which has strong impact.
It has one centre of interest coinciding with the point of emergence from the container (radial construction). The simplest of the Modern (20th Century) designs. The few but significant pieces of good quality, clear-cut plant material should be chosen to create height (or width) and interesting spaces, contrasts of form and texture, also rhythm. Some plant material needs to unify and harmonise with the modern concept container. Mechanics should be inconspicuous – a pinholder may be the best option. No unnecessary material which may detract from the tailored effect and strong impact – a minimum of material for maximum effect.
