Members and visitors are invited to a Floral Design Competition and Demonstrations
Friday 1 and Saturday 2 February 2019
at Mittagong R.S.L. Club
Corner of Bessemer Street and Old Hume Highway, Mittagong 2575.
THURSDAY 31 January
4.00 pm – 8.00 pm – An area will be available for creating designs – please note that there will be no staging of exhibits on Thursday. All designs may be brought in ready for staging.
FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY
7.00 am – Club will be open for design creation.
7.45 am – 9.00 am – Staging for classes 1 – 12
OPEN TO ALL – Bench space as indicated
Class 1 Summer Elegance – Design to include roses – Bench Space – 60cm
Class 2 Contained By Glass – Bench Space – 50cm
Class 3 Split Level – A design using two containers at different levels with or without bases. Materials are placed to form a dominant visual path linking both containers to achieve unity and harmony. (AFAA Manual definition Page 54) – Bench Space – 70cm
Class 4 Spiraling Up – an interpretive design – Bench Space – 70cm
Class 5 Plaque – Change of Seasons; – made by fixing plant material to any suitable rigid backing. Radial in construction. It may be framed or unframed. Plant material does not extend past the backing. (AFAA Manual definition Page 43) – Bench Space – 60cm Note – exhibitor to provide own staging.
Class 6 Shades of Green – a petite design. (A design of any style, over 10cm and less than 23cm overall (height, width and depth). All components, container, plant material, base, etc, must be in scale with one another within the size limitation. AFAA Manual definition Page 54). Limited to 14 entries
INTERMEDIATE CLASSES: refer to Show Rule 22. Bench space as indicated.
Class 7 An arrangement using a boot – Bench Space – 40cm
Class 8 Line on Line – One container is used. Two lines converging. A strong vertical line, 11/2 to twice the height of the container, plus a lower, shorter line, e.g. Vertical/Hogarth, Vertical /Diagonal, etc. (AFAA Manual definition Page 43; refer diagrams page 86). – Bench Space – 70cm
Class 9 Roses and Citrus. Foliage may be incorporated – Bench Space – 60cm
NOVICE CLASSES – refer to Show Rule 22. – Bench space as indicated
Class 10 Table Arrangement for a Country Wedding – Bench Space – 60cm
Class 11 Straight and Narrow – a vertical design; – a tall slender design with a strong upward line. Material may extend a little below the rim of the container. (AFAA Manual definition Page 42) – Bench Space – 30cm
Class 12 Simple but Elegant – design to include rose/s. – Bench Space – 50cm
SPECIAL CLASS – From My Garden – arrangement in a basket or container – may include flowers, foliage, fruit and/or vegetables. Must be from the exhibitor’s garden and have been home grown by the exhibitor for more than three months. Will be judged on presentation and quality of horticultural material only. – Bench Space – 80cm.

10.15 am – 11.45 am Demonstration – Ikebana – Vesna Isik, a sought after Ikebana designer and teacher who travels extensively to bring new ideas and techniques to us.
11.45 am – 12.30 pm Judges comments/analysis of exhibits
12.30 pm – 1.45 pm Lunch (at own expense) and Judges Meeting
1.45 pm – 2.45 pm Demonstration – Mary Fairlie-Cuninghame – Spheres and Domes
2.45 pm – 3.45 pm Demonstration – Lanny Pramana – Seasons
4.00 pm – 5.00 pm NSWFAA General Meeting
SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY
9.00 am – 9.15 am Opening and Welcome by NSWFAA President
9.15 am – 10.15 am Demonstration – Kim Baillie – What is your design style?
10.15 am – 11.15 am Demonstration – Madhu Shah – Pave and Tapestry Design Styles
11.15 am – 12.15 pm An Insight Into A Show Schedule – Kim Baillie
12.15 pm – 1.00 pm Competition hints / Class Interpretations / Q&A
Close and dismantling of exhibits

An award for Best in Show will be awarded by the judge/s from the 1st place winners of Classes 1-12.

All classes have black material on the bench except class 6 – to be displayed on grey petite stands on black marble.
Bench space – as indicated Bench depth 65cm Height unlimited
Horticultural material to predominate
All exhibits judged from the front and sides.
Designs may be brought in ready for staging.
All exhibits judged under the guidelines of the AFAA Manual.
Cost: NSWFAA Members Friday – $20; Saturday- $10
Non Members Friday – $25; Saturday- $15
viewing exhibits only gold coin donation
Vesna Isik Ikebana demonstration $20
$5 to attend each of the other demonstrations
All proceeds to the NSW Floral Art Association.
